29 May 2009 First is certainly not the last: Wandered into the First chrome pole palace (Soi 8) early one evening and what I saw was somewhat surprising. I wasn’t really expecting much and my first impression was of an oversized den, nicely appointed, but lacking character and that hard-to-get ingredient, ambience. By the time I left, admittedly after only one drink, I have to say I thought it wasn’t such a bad place. There’s a happy hour from 7-10:00PM with bottled amber fluid and house liver wasters retailing at just 60 baht; the music is a bit old hat (I think I heard at least two Boney-M tunes), but the really plus side were the numbers and overall quality of the dancing maidens. They range in age from young to veteran status. Shape-wise, most were lean and fit, with a couple of standard porkers that every bar seems to keep for those who like their women of portly dimensions. The mamasan was friendly without being pushy. Definitely worth a visit.
